Purity (Taharah) is the key to Salah. In the Shafi’i Madhhab, Wudu is not just a ritual wash but a precise act of worship with specific pillars (Arkan) that must be fulfilled for the prayer to be valid.
The 6 Fard (Obligatory) Acts of Wudu
In the Shafi’i school, there are six essential pillars of Wudu. If any of these are missed, the Wudu is invalid:
-
Niyyah (Intention): Making the intention in the heart at the moment of washing the face.
-
Washing the Face: From the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear.
-
Washing the Arms: Including the elbows.
-
Wiping Part of the Head: Wiping even a few hairs is sufficient.
-
Washing the Feet: Including the ankles.
-
Tartiib (Order): Performing the above steps in the correct sequence.
Step-by-Step Wudu Procedure
1. Starting with Tasmiyah and Sunnahs
Begin by saying “Bismillah” and washing your hands up to the wrists three times. Brush your teeth using a Miswak or a toothbrush, as this is highly recommended.
2. Rinsing the Mouth and Nose
Rinse your mouth (Madmadah) and then sniff water into your nose (Istinshaq) three times.
3. Washing the Face and Niyyah
As the water touches your face, mentally intend: “I intend to perform the fard of wudu.” Wash the entire face three times.
4. Washing the Arms
Wash your right arm up to and including the elbow three times, then repeat for the left arm. Ensure no part of the skin remains dry.
5. Wiping the Head and Ears
Pass wet hands over your head. While wiping a part of the head is mandatory, it is Sunnah to wipe the entire head. After this, wipe the inner and outer parts of both ears.
6. Washing the Feet
Wash both feet up to and including the ankles. Be sure to wash between the toes using your pinky finger (Khilal).
What Nullifies Wudu?
Your Wudu remains valid until:
-
Exit of anything from the private parts.
-
Deep sleep or loss of consciousness
-
Skin-to-skin contact between a non-mahram man and woman (a specific rule in Shafi’i Fiqh).
-
Touching the private parts with the palm of the hand.
Conclusion
Performing Wudu correctly ensures that your foundation for worship is solid. Following the Shafi’i method brings attention to detail and spiritual discipline to your daily routine.
